My Courses
In the Spring 2007 semester I'm teaching:
- AST-A453 Topical Astrophysics: Nuclear Astrophysics
- PHYS-P222 Disc. - Physics 2 (two sections)
My Research
I'm an experimental nuclear physicist, with interests in heavy-ion
reaction mechanisms, reactions with radioactive beams, and reactions
with astrophysical implications. Since coming to IUSB I've collaborated
in experiments at Notre
Dame's Nuclear Structure Laboratory, at
Argonne National Laboratory,
at the University of
Toronto, the National
Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory,
and at the
Université catholique de Louvain, in Belgium.
Currently I'm representing IUSB on the MoNA collaboration.
MoNA (the Modular Neutron Array) is a high-efficiency neutron
detection wall being constructed for the NSCL. Assembly,
testing, and calibration of the 144 plastic scinillator elements
of MoNA was carried out primarily at eight undergraduate
institutions.
You're welcome to look at my list of
publications if you like. Also, here's a description of
Research in Nuclear Physics at IUSB.
My Education
I received a B.A. in physics from Hanover
College in 1977, and my Ph.D. in nuclear physics from
Notre Dame in 1987.
My Professional Experience
I spent two years, from 1987-89, as a post-doctoral research associate
("onderzoeker") at the Kernfysisch Versneller
Instituut (KVI) in Groningen, the Netherlands (ik spreek nog een
heel klein beetje Nederlands). From 1989-91 I was a Research Assistant
Professor in the Department of Radiology, Division of Nuclear Medicine,
at the University of Cincinnati.
I've been a faculty member in the Department of Physics and Astronomy
at IUSB since 1991, where I also served as Acting Assistant Dean of the
Division of Liberal Arts & Sciences from 1995 to 1997. In the summer of
2006 I began my second three-year term as department chair. During the
1998-99 academic year, while on sabbatical, I had a visiting appointment
at the Institut de Physique
Nucléaire, of the Université
Catholique de Louvain, in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium (oui, je parle aussi
un tres petit peu francais). I also spent
two years as a physics and math teacher at North Putnam Jr-Sr High
School, in Bainbridge, Indiana, before I started graduate school.
My Other Interests
I'm a bicycle transportation advocate, serving as chairperson of the
St. Joseph County Bicycle/Pedestrian Committee, an advisory committee
of the Michiana Area Council of Governments (MACOG). This committee has
prepared a comprehensive revision to the Bicycle/Pedestrian
Element of the MACOG 2015 Transportation Plan, which was approved by
the MACOG Policy Board in May, 1996. Some time ago I posted a
draft version of this
Bicycle/Pedestrian Plan. It is essentially the same as the
version adopted by the Policy Board.
There are lots of good
bicycle sites on the Web. Two I've found are
BikePlan Source and
Cyber Cyclery.
For us Hoosiers, there's the
Indiana Bicycle Coalition
web site.
